The Otters closed out their 2017 PDL season with a disappointing 5-0 loss at Tormenta FC in Statesboro, Georgia Saturday night. The Otters struggled on the offensive end and ultimately succumbed to the relentless Tormenta attack, conceding four second-half goals.
The loss dropped the Otters season record to 3-9-2, finishing ninth in the division with 11 points. However, that is a marked improvement over last year’s record and point total from the Otters’ inaugural season.
The game day squad featured plenty of young players as well as some players with local ties like Evan Harr (Carson-Newman) and Jordan Broadwater (ETSU) featuring in the second half.
Tormenta were on the attack all night, recording 25 shots for the game. Despite that, Juan Carlos Ramirez (Montreat) had a strong game at left back, stopping numerous Tormenta attacks.
Torge Wiedenroth (Reinhardt) also did well in goal, recording five saves and breaking the Otters single-season saves record in three less games. Wiedenroth’s 41 saves in six games bested Kari Svennson’s previous record of 38 in nine games.
The starting lineup was without regulars Carlos Rubio (Ohio Valley), Dion Stergiotis (Marshall), and Mateo Garcés (Pfeiffer), as they were given a deserved night off before traveling to our partners at the Charleston Battery to try out.
The Otters season may be over, but many of our players will be returning to college (some locally) and we will continue to provide updates throughout their seasons! Be sure to follow along on social media for upcoming events as well as giveaways and other important updates!
